A record number of 20,750 runners participated in the 29th Vivicittá Run for the City on Sunday, organisers said. The organiser Budapest Sports Office said participants included runners from 770 communities in Hungary as well as more than 1,000 foreigners representing 57 countries from as far afield as Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Pakistan, Vietnam and Venezuela.

The number of requests for refugee status was never before as high as last year, the head of the Office of Immigration and Citizenship said. While 2,157 such requests were processed in 2012, this number rose by nearly nine-fold to 18,900 in 2013, Zsuzsanna Végh told a press conference in Debrecen, eastern Hungary, on Monday.
