Szombathely, in western Hungary, will once again turn back the clock this summer as it hosts the 24th Savaria Historical Carnival from 21 to 24 August. The four-day event will see the city’s streets filled with Roman legions, medieval merchants, baroque nobles, and a host of other historical figures from across the centuries.

It has only been celebrated in Hungary since 1990 however, and the equivalent of Valentine here is the name Bálint, whose name day falls on 14 February.

Hungarian tables are richly laden for the celebration of Easter. Alongside slices of freshly cooked fragrant ham, the table is adorned with a braided Easter loaf, there are eggs boiled in the cooking liquid from the ham, and grated horseradish served alone or in a vinegar dressing.
