A 2011 vintage Merlot from the Szeleshát cellar of Szekszárd, in southern Hungary, and a 2012 vintage Chardonnay from the Nyakas cellar in Etyek, near Budapest, have won the Wine of Budapest prizes, granted for the first time by the capital.

The Ministry of Rural Development has issued an exclusive publication showcasing the status of Hungarian white wines at the end of 2013. Awash with wine as we are in Hungary, it’s nigh on impossible to imagine that globally, we could be in crisis. If anything, I’m noticing more cellars adding their bottles to the supermarket shelves, which may simply mean that marketing has upped a notch or two.
