I’ve wanted to blog about our Queen’s Birthday Party for a little while now. But first we got very busy in the Embassy with preparations for the European Council and then I went down to the Balaton for a couple of days. Now things are a little more back to normal and I’m catching up.

Telenor In Hungary Won’t Swallow Telephone Tax

Telenor will pass on added costs from the new telephone tax to subscribers unless one of the two taxes hitting the sector is phased out, communication director István Kutas announced yesterday. Telenor will face an additional Ft 1 billion burden per month, if the new tax, the second sectoral tax, begins July 1, Kutas observed.

Mobile phone operators have asked lawmakers to consider recommendations on the telephone tax before Parliament votes on Friday. The tax does not serve Hungary’s interest and places a disproportional burden on telecom companies, which have been paying the crisis tax since 2010, wrote Vodafone, T-Mobile and Pannon in a joint statement.

Sziget Budapest Loses Main Sponsor As Vodafone Pulls Out

After two years as the main sponsor, Vodafone will not take a sponsorship role in this year’s Sziget Festival, the mobile operator confirmed, citing cost cuts. Vodafone became the main sponsor of the annual open-air summer festival in 2010. The company called the last two years a success, adding that co-operation with the organisers was good.

"Media and communications authority NMHH has excluded RCS & RDS, the company behind the brand name Digi, and Vietnamese telecom company Viettel from the 900MHz frequency tender. Only Magyar Telekom, Vodafone, Telenor and a consortium of state companies Magyar Posta, MVM and MFB Invest filed valid applications for future bidding, the NMHH said.
