• Xpat Opinion: Spectacular Renewal Ahead For Budapest's Public Transport

    Budapest has just accepted the budget to replace 37 yellow trams and 24 red electric trolley buses using EU grants and government funding through the years 2014 and 2015. Most of the current vehicles are 1967 and 1978 models. Furthermore, 150 brand new air-conditioned Mercedes buses will appear on the streets next May. Blue buses provide 40% of the public transport capacity of Budapest; their average age is 18 years. For now here's a video of the spectacular Christmas tram in Budapest.

    If you thought the only Hungarian connection to vampires is Bela Lugosi, and the only vampire connection to Prince Charles is Dracula – think again. Geneologists claim the connection comes from Princess Marie of Edinburgh (cousin of Charles’ great-grandfather) who married I Ferdinand of Romania. In a video clip recently presented by Romania at the World Travel Market exhibition in London, Prince Charles confirmed being a descendant of Dracula, otherwise known as Vlad the Impaler.

    Police have begun proceedings against six people following a clash with local Roma outside the Hatvan police station last Thursday. Police spokesman Bálint Soltész said an angry crowd gathered outside the station after police detained 12 people on suspicion of drug abuse.
