  • Armenia Severs All Ties With Hungary

    Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan announced that Armenia is severing diplomatic and all ties with Hungary, speaking before the ambassadors of UN member states accredited to his country in Yerevan on Friday. Hungary extradited 35-year-old Ramil Sahib Safarov to Azerbaijan earlier on Friday. Safarov, who had been serving a life term in Hungary since 2006, was pardoned by Azeri President Ilham Aliyev in a presidential amnesty immediately on arrival.

    This year the Hungarian beer fest has a lot more to offer than ever before. It will be open for a day longer, will be in a larger space in the Buda Castle, will present nearly 200 different local and international beers, and will offer many specialty beer types. Another novelty of this year is a taster mug (0,2 L), designed for drinkers who would like to taste many beers without getting too merry too soon.     Over the past few days the outrageous behavior of a large group of football fans at the Israeli-Hungarian “friendly” match on August 15 has become an international cause célèbre. Initially the behavior of the neo-Nazi fans went unnoticed in Hungary, with the possible exception of the rest of those 10,000 people who attended the match. Although they were screaming “stinking Jews” at the top of their lungs all through the match, the most egregious part of their performance occurred during the Israeli anthem.

    On 20 August, celebrations across Hungary have marked the national holiday in honour of the first Christian king of Hungary and the foundation of the Hungarian state. In the morning, the national flag was hoisted in front of Parliament in Budapest, in a ceremony attended by President Janos Áder, Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén and other government members, as well as diplomats, representatives of the churches and several hundred others.
