New Museum For Bees Opened In Budapest
As a further development of their art work, the collective “finger” (Florian Haas and Andreas Wolf) established a new branch of their Frankfurt-based New Museum for Bees (NMB) in Budapest. The museum opened its doors to the public on 22 August at 6 PM, with an intensive opening weekend of public events including concerts, screenings, artist talks, discussions and regular guided tours held by the artists and the collaborators of the project.

“For Bees” will be taken literally here, so that all exhibition rooms of the museum will be designed mainly for the visiting and use of bees. But also the singular exhibitions, as well as the observation of the peculiar visitor’s stream will be of interest for people, so that the museum will be accessible to all visitors (bees and humans) within the regular opening hours.

In Budapest the New Museum for Bees will present three exhibition rooms conceived especially for the Hungarian context: one will deal with the question of honeybee democracy and the collective decision-making processes of bees, inviting the public to reflect on whether we can learn from bees to do a better democracy? Drawing on the research of U.S. scientist Thomas D. Seeley, we will be introduced to the swarm (that is collective) intelligence of bee societies.

The second exhibition is similarly thought-provoking: based on the U.N.’s proposal (Food and Agriculture Organization, May 2013) to change our traditional diets and switch to edible insects (including bee puppets) for ecological reasons and as means of survival in areas of famine and food shortage, the artists invite visitors to vote. Should we eat them? The third room presents how the museum functions as an alternative economic model and allows insight into the work of the mixed bee group.
