Peter Jones, General Manager at The Chava, is a third generation career hotelier, born in Australia he attended Wesley College between 1971 – 1979. Today he is a respected operator in the Phuket travel industry, and an active member of several wine clubs on the island, and a well-liked expat 'foodie'.

Asked about where to have some fresh foodlie fun in Phuket, he offered the following insider advice, “Rawai sea-gypsy fishing village, where you purchase the freshest seafood direct from the fishermen, walk across the road to your restaurant of choice and they prepare it to your liking, all for about $USD 3 per kilo. On top of that tall icy cold beers are the same price.”

Peter began his Hotel career cleaning ashtrays, washing dishes and picking up glasses under his father’s supervision at the Royal Hotel in Ferntree Gully in Melbourne at the age of 12. He moved into the start of his lengthy career as a full time Barman, then a Bottle Shop Manager and Duty Manager at The Royal, before moving across to work for the Billabong Hotel Company, working up to his first Hotel Manager position at age 21 at the Coach & Horses Hotel in the Melbourne suburb of Ringwood.

In 2005 Peter was appointed to the role of State Manager responsible for ALH Group’s 32 Hotels in South Australia, turning a struggling group of Venues into what became regarded as a very successful business over the following 7 years. He was then asked to take on the most important operation in the group, the State Manager’s role in Victoria/Tasmania with a portfolio of 97 Hotels and Clubs, contributing the largest share of bottom line to the group’s balance sheet.

The Mathieson Family had involvement in The Chava in Phuket and Peter was a regular visitor to Thailand with his wife Sharon, so when the opportunity arose he leapt at the chance to become an expat, taking over as the GM in mid-2013. Currently ranked #1 on TripAdvisor.com in this district of Phuket, and Travelers' Choice 2017 Winner (Small Hotels / Family / Best Service), hundreds of excellent reviews speak volumes about The Chava, and Peter's professional management and extensive experience. Here are just three recent quotes:

"When we were welcomed by GM Peter, wife Sharon and staff at Chava after a long flight we felt immediately relaxed, it did feel like we were entering a sanctuary which was quiet and intimate," reports a recent guest from Australia who stayed at The Chava with family.

They continue, "The resort buildings were covered with tropical plants that gave the pool tranquil lagoon type feeling and it was easy to feel at peace...We stayed at Chava for 4 nights and had a beautiful European Continental breakfast served by the pool each morning. The coffee was of barista standard...

The resort itself is across the road from Surin beach so a short walk to the beautiful beach and warm waters, one of the best beaches in Phuket in my view and from what i have read. Everything from restaurants to mini marts to pharmacies are in walking distance from Chava and otherwise there is plenty to do in the local area to keep you occupied when you are not relaxing in the resort."

Kirsten, who stayed at The Chava this January, reports, "We had a great stay at the Chava. The room was huge and well-kept, truly 5-star. The bath tub in the master bedroom was big enough for 2. There are balconies off of every room and a big balcony with a dining table off the living room. The kitchen was stocked with everything you would need to cook a gourmet meal. The grounds and pool were beautiful and lush.

We went with another couple and stayed in a two-bedroom room, and were happily surprised to have 2 bathrooms and lots of privacy. We are used to traveling in Asia and dealing with hiccups, but everything from hotel transfer to room service was above expectations."

Another guest who visited this January, with family, writes, "Wonderful, personalised service. The manager, Peter, greeted us upon arrival and gave us his personal recommendations for the stay.

Rooms are fantastic - huge; nicely furnished; lovely showers; soft yet supportive bedding. Good advice from concierge on local tours - the boat ride with dinner on Phang Nga bay was memorable!

What touched us most was when one of us came down with a viral fever on checkout day. As our flight was in the evening, they very kindly extended our checkout time so we could wait in the cool of our room till airport transfer arrived. Thank you for the superb service!"
