Why Spas in Hungary are Likely to Close for Winter
Due to the increase in energy prices and the decline in the number of guests, as many as half of Hungary’s spas may close from autumn until spring, president Zoltán Kántás of the Hungarian Bath Association told Infostart.

He said a recent survey found that popular thermal baths in such spa towns of Hévíz, Harkány, Hajdúszoboszló and Gyula may also close temporarily.

The operation of the spas has already become almost 30% more expensive this year.

This is largely "fuelled" by the 260% increase in energy prices, and the bath operators expect prices to rise further, and that the price of electricity will match that of natural gas.

The ones that will suffer the most are those baths that have been renovated with significant money received via the state subsidy scheme Kisfaludy Tourism Programme.

"We will propose that the government apply a price cap, similar to households, in the spa sector as well. And there has never been such a great opportunity to cut the VAT for baths, and to upgrade the energy system of spas," Kántás declared.
