WhiskyNet Insight: Wemyss Malts the Independent Whisky Curators
Most of the skilful whisky drinkers know the whisky making regions in Scotland – Highland, Lowland, Islay, Speyside, Islands and Campbelltown. But what about a different approach which goes beyond the familiar territories of region, age and finish? Let us introduce you to the Independent Whisky Curators, the Wemyss Malts who can answer this question.

Founded by William Wemyss in 2005, Wemyss Malts is an independent, family-owned company with a reputation for creating exceptional spirits. With a meticulous approach, passion for quality and creative mindset, William’s sister, Isabella, hand selects the finest whiskies from across Scotland’s renowned regions to create a beautiful portfolio of blended malt and single cask expressions.

Spirited heritage

However, the Wemyss family history started much earlier: they have direct links to Scotland’s whisky history when Haig built the first distillery on their land in the Kingdom of Fife in 1840. Wemyss land in the Kingdom of Fife has been used for many decades to grow quality barley and continues to supply the very best to maltsters for Scotch malt whisky production.

Since the founding of Wemyss Malts in 2005, it has been independently run by brother and sister duo William and Isabella, who are kin of the Scottish Wemyss family. Enthused by his time spent with the expert wine blenders in Southern France, William Wemyss was inspired to create distinctive and bold Scottish whiskies. Isabella Wemyss, with her eye, and nose, for uncompromising quality, began to source exquisite single malts from Scotland and the very best oak casks from around the world.

Led by flavour

Not all Scotch/whisky tastes the same. Scotland offers a wide spectrum of malt whisky created throughout the length and breadth of the country with a vast diversity of flavours. Wemyss whiskies are crafted to suit each taste whether that is sweet, complexly spicy or gently smoky.

By carefully and considerately combining specially selected casks from around Scotland we are able to craft distinct flavoursome whisky through the art of blending. The result is small-batch and hand-crafted malts that are inspired by the aroma and flavours they showcase: The Hive, Spice King and Peat Chimney.

The Hive

The Hive is a small batch, hand-crafted Scotch whisky that captures the sweetness of Speyside in a smooth, honey-like expression. On the nose, a bouquet of florals and sticky blossom honey. On the palate, zesty orange and ginger tingle on the tongue. The finish is warm and zesty, with clove spiked grapefruit.

Enjoy The Hive neat, on the rocks, served long and refreshing in a Hive-Ball with cloudy lemonade and zingy lemon wheel garnish, or try a riff on a classic Old Fashioned or Whisky Sour.

Spice King

Spice King is also a small batch, hand-crafted Scotch whisky, intriguing and beautifully complex with spice and subtle smoke, maritime and citrus notes. On the nose, rich with spiced orange and lively blossom. On the palate, deep ginger syrup with a blast of salty sea spray, pepper and aromatic spice. The finish lingers with warm smoke and tingling black pepper.

Enjoy Spice King neat or served bold and refreshing in a Highball with ginger ale and zesty orange wedge garnish, in a beautifully complex Old Fashioned or an enticing new take on a Sazerac.

Peat Chimney

Peat Chimney is the third small batch, hand-crafted Scotch whisky in the core range of Wemyss, that captures the allure of smoke in a balanced expression rich in smoky maritime and citrus notes. Aromas of heather smoke drift alongside stone fruits and orange zest. On the palate, warm peat puffs over rich espresso and muscovado sugar. To finish, flinty minerality sizzles out to a soft, sweet finale.

Enjoy Peat Chimney neat, on the rocks or served as a highball with soda water and mint sprig garnish, or a smoky take on an Old Fashioned or Penicillin cocktails.

Limited editions and Kingsbarns

Apart from the Wemyss core range, Wemyss Malts also produce limited edition expressions, for example batch strength bottlings and whiskies with age statements. The whisky producer has another popular brand called Kingsbarns which are also award-winning single malt whiskies.

Available expressions of Wemyss Malts can be purchased in the webshop of WhiskyNet.
