Increase in Railway Accidents in Hungary Blamed on External Factors by MÁV
The Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) Group reported a rise in railway accidents in 2024 caused by factors beyond MÁV's control, primarily due to the negligence of road users.

A statement by the company noted that the “Érj haza biztonságban!” (Get Home Safely!) campaign, launched in 2022, continues to raise awareness about railway dangers through educational podcasts.

In 2024, 55 fatalities and 46 serious injuries resulted from inattention and traffic rule violations. Notably, there were 76 railway crossing accidents, an increase of 15 from the previous year, leading to 14 deaths and multiple injuries.

Additionally, 66 trespassing incidents occurred involving pedestrians, cyclists, or e-scooter users being struck by trains.

The financial impact of these accidents on MÁV exceeded HUF 200 million in 2024. The company emphasizes the life-threatening risks of unauthorized presence on railway premises and urges adherence to safety regulations to prevent further tragedies.
