Zsigo said pensioners would get special assistance as the government takes steps to address "unjustified" price increases with measures such as a mandatory cap on markups on a range of food products.

The decision to give food vouchers to pensioners was taken based on feedback from seniors, he added.

Draft legislation on the measure will soon be submitted to parliament.

Govt to issue food vouchers to pensioners

The government has issued a decree on food vouchers for pensioners, to be delivered by post by Oct 15, the government communications centre (KTK) said.

The 30,000 forint (EUR 75) vouchers can be used to buy food by the end of the year, KTK said. All those receiving pensions due to their age or disability will be eligible, and the payment will also be available to widows and orphans, the statement said.

The vouchers cannot be used in restaurants, the statement said.
