Official Heat Warning Issued in Hungary + Practical Advice
- 5 Jun 2025 8:17 AM

This is based on the forecast of HungaroMet Hungarian Meteorological Service Nonprofit Zrt., the National Center for Public Health and Pharmacy (NNGYK) and the National Directorate General for Disaster Prevention (OKF) informed MTI.
Much warmer than usual weather is expected in the coming days, and the persistent heat is not only unpleasant, but also places a serious burden on our bodies, especially on young children, the elderly, chronically ill and pregnant women, they wrote.
They emphasized that the hottest hours usually fall between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., so during these times, we should seek shade or a cool room, avoid strenuous physical work, and take several showers with lukewarm water.
They also warned us not to wait until we are thirsty, as our bodies need more fluids than usual in hot weather.
It's recommend to drink water, tea, sugar-free, non-carbonated drinks, but tomato juice, yogurt, kefir or a bowl of cooling soup can also be good choices. However, it is worth avoiding alcohol, caffeinated drinks and sugary soft drinks, as these can further increase dehydration, they warned.
When outdoors, it is advisable to wear light, well-ventilated clothing made of natural materials, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. In addition, everyone is advised to use sunscreen appropriate for their skin type.
They said it is extremely important that no one take small children for walks in the heat and that they only get some fresh air in a shady place.
Furthermore, never leave children or pets in a parked car for even a minute, because in the sun the temperature inside the car can rise to 70 degrees Celsius. They asked that if anyone notices this, they call 112 immediately.
They emphasized that everyone should pay attention to the storage of medications; even preparations that do not require refrigeration should not be left in a warm, sunny place, as their effectiveness may decrease.
Those who use air conditioning are advised not to set the temperature below 27 degrees Celsius and to turn it off from time to time to avoid joint problems. Those who do not have the opportunity to relax in an air-conditioned environment at home can find the addresses of air-conditioned rooms accessible to everyone on the disaster management website.
The announcement stated that in order to prevent fires, fires in the forest are only allowed at designated fire pits, and only if there is no fire ban in the given county.
In such heat, it is not recommended to burn garden waste, even where it is permitted by the municipality.
Attention was also drawn to the fact that when grilling or cooking, the fire should not be left unattended for even a minute.
National heat alerts are also available to the public through the free-to-download Emergency application operated by the disaster management, which sends immediate notifications about current alerts, their duration and level, they indicated.
They asked us to look out for each other, especially those who live alone, are elderly, or have limited mobility. Even offering a glass of water, a short phone call or a few minutes in the shade can save a life, the statement says.
