At their first meeting, held on Tuesday at the Budapest Music Centre, participants began reviewing what they described as urgent policy issues. Discussions focused primarily on current funding rules and the future role of the National Film Institute, according to a statement released after the event.

The initiative aims to present the incoming culture ministry with recommendations that are both professionally grounded and democratically legitimate, developed through broad consultation across the industry.

Filmreform has also issued an open call inviting a wide range of industry participants — including creators, producers, distributors, educators, technicians and critics — to take part.

Those involved are encouraged to engage with existing professional organisations or establish new ones where representation is currently lacking.

Organisers emphasised that the reform effort is built on principles of democracy, professionalism, trust, transparency and consensus.

In their view, Hungary’s film policy framework requires stronger professional representation, more consistent rule-based operation, performance-based funding mechanisms, and closer alignment with European Union standards.

The first phase of consultations will run until 8 May.

Draft proposals are set to be presented at the Eurocine international film industry exhibition in Budapest, taking place on 8–9 May, before being submitted to the incoming ministry for further discussion.
