Police Investigating Car Dealerships in Hungary Linked to Billionaire Meszaros
The National Bureau of Investigation of the rapid response police is conducting an investigation in connection with public fleet tenders of car dealerships linked to businessman Lorinc Meszaros for alleged mismanagement and anti-competitive agreements in public procurement procedures, the Chief Prosecutor said in response to a written inquiry by lawmaker Bence Tordai (Dialogue), the Chief Prosecutor's Office said on its website on Tuesday.

The website also showed a letter dated April 17, which included the following: "Have criminal proceedings been initiated in connection with the public-funded fleet tenders of Meszaros M1 Kft and Mercarius Kft, and if so, what stage are they at?", Tordai posed several questions to the Chief Prosecutor.

The response stated that "at this stage of the investigation, the provision of further information falls within the authority of the person in charge of the investigating authority."

News portal Telex said on Tuesday that in 2023, investigative journalism outfit Atlatszo reported that the car dealership Meszaros M1 Kft had frequently won public procurement contracts by agreeing to very short deadlines.

In 2025, the activities of Meszaros M1 Kft also caught the attention of the Integrity Authority (IH), and following their motion for review, the National Bureau of Investigation ordered an investigation into the matter.

The IH found that Meszaros’s company had won several government tenders by submitting bids that were more expensive than those of some of its competitors, Telex reported.
