Food Waste in Hungary Cut by Over One-Third in Nine Years
The amount of food waste in Hungary has been reduced by 37.2pc over the past nine years, according to a survey by national food safety authority Nebih.

Nebih's survey involved 151 households at the end of 2025.

Ready-made meals, fresh fruits and vegetables and baked goods account for more than three-quarters of all avoidable food waste.

Hungarian households continue to generate less food waste then the European average but still more efforts are needed if Hungary is to meet the target.

The European Union last year set the target of cutting food waste generated by households and catering by at least 30pc of the average of the 2021-23 period by 2030, Nebih said.

“There’s no simpler dish in the world than soup – it’s like how it’s hot in summer and cold in winter. You just boil bones in water, it’s delicious, nourishing, everyone loves it. These are the kinds of things that bring me joy,” says Márton Hetey, who trained as a chef and has spent the past decade working in kitchens and bakeries.
