The 26-year-old, starting from pole position, secured his first win of the season and the 12th of his career. This was his second victory in Mogyorod, following last year's triumph.

Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion and Red Bull driver, finished second, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the 19-year-old Mercedes driver leading the championship, took third place.

With Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) and his Mercedes teammate George Russell finishing behind Antonelli, the championship leader extended his points advantage.

Formula 1 will resume after a near one-month break with the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort.

Magyar: Hungary aims to keep Formula 1 at Hungaroring

Hungary intends to ensure that Hungaroring continues to host Formula 1 races, Prime Minister Peter Magyar said on Sunday at the venue of the 41st Hungarian Grand Prix.

The prime minister met Stefano Domenicali, Chairman-CEO of Formula 1, in Mogyorod. After the discussion, Magyar said: "It is remarkable that Hungaroring has been operating continuously for forty years to everyone's satisfaction."

"We have a contract with Liberty Media until 2032, but I had the opportunity to speak with Mr Domenicali. Everyone is satisfied because a record number of spectators attended this weekend... We discussed how this could be further developed because both F1 and Liberty are working to extend these three- or four-day events even further so that countries can make the most of the potential of the series from both an economic and a tourism perspective," Magyar said.

"We have a new government, but support for the Hungaroring remains unchanged. We need to review the figures, because, according to the contract, the previous government spent 90 billion forints on renovating and constructing buildings... We must investigate where the costs are going and how we can manage public funds even more efficiently," he said.

"We agreed with the management of Formula 1 that we will continue negotiations, because we have another five-year option after 2032, and we must work out the details of that," the prime minister said.

"It would be important for as many Hungarians as possible to be able to come here, because although it's a fantastic export product from a tourism and marketing perspective, 70-80 percent of the spectators here come from abroad... I

t's a tremendous achievement and of historic significance that the first race behind the Iron Curtain took place in Hungary in 1986, and the Hungaroring has survived many challenges in Hungary. We must work to make it even better," Magyar said, highlighting that the series has a highly professional team and that "we should be proud that the work of Hungarians adds so much value."

The 2026 Hungarian F1 Grand Prix was a record-breaking race as it attracted an all-time high three-day weekend attendance of 310,000 spectators, making it the most-attended event in the history of the Hungaroring.

The race was the first Formula 1 Grand Prix held after the Hungaroring's major redevelopment, featuring a new main grandstand, modern pit building, and upgraded fan facilities, which helped accommodate the larger crowd.
