In Bekes County, in the south-east, the temperature hit 36 degrees Celsius in Dombegyhaz and 35.2 C in Mezokovacshaza on Saturday afternoon. This set a new national daily heat record, surpassing the previous 35.1 C recorded last year in Korosladany and Korosszakal, HungaroMet said.

Other regions saw lower peaks before a cold front crossed the country later in the day.

Strong winds uproot trees, snap branches in several counties

Strong winds had toppled trees onto cars, buildings, and power lines in several counties by Saturday afternoon, and firefighters were called to remove fallen trees and branches, the disaster management authority said on its website.

In Baranya County, a poplar tree fell from a residential courtyard onto a telecommunications line in Szilagy, which firefighters are removing with a chainsaw, it said.

In Bacs-Kiskun County, units were dispatched to multiple locations. In Kiskunhalas, a branch fell onto an electric line, in Kiskunmajsa onto a telecommunications line, and in Ordas, a large tree fell onto road 51347, the authority said.

In Bekes County, a tree fell in front of the old primary school building in Mezokovacshaza.

In Csongrad-Csanad County, a dried-out pine tree fell onto a building roof in Nagymagocs.

The strong winds also gave firefighters multiple tasks in the capital. In the third district's Nanasi Road, a tree fell onto cars, blocking Kadosa Street. Firefighters removed the tree from the vehicles and then started pruning two other dried-out trees. In the sixth district's Kmety Gyorgy Street, two large branches snapped and require removal, the disaster management authority said.
