This year’s 'beach season' in the Hungarian capital starts on Saturday 27 April, with the opening of Palatinus, Dagály and Paskál thermal baths. Árpád Forrásfürdő will open again from 18 May, while traditional summer 'strands' - as they're known in Hungary - like Római and Pünkösdfürdő will open in June - see below for all opening dates.

The National Weather Service Thursday evening issued a special weather alert from Thursday until midnight on Sunday as temperatures exceeding 26C degrees on Friday and 27C over the weekend are expected in most of the country. Residents are asked to drink plenty of fluids in the coming days and, if possible, to avoid the blazing sun between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitor numbers at six baths and water parks in Budapest were up by 23% in June compared to the same month last year, sales and marketing director of baths operator Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei Szilvia Czinege said. Since June, visitor numbers at baths and water parks in Budapest topped 60,000 on two separate weekends because of an early summer heat wave.

The recent disturbing rise in the consumption of cheap and unregulated substances known as “designer drugs”, which have recetly resulted in several deaths across the country, could mean that Hungary is sitting on a ticking time bomb and the country is on the edge of a new type of public health crisis, journalist Csaba Lukács writes in the daily newspaper Magyar Nemzet.
