App-based taxi company Uber has taken out full-page advertisements in Népszabadság and Világgazdaság today, arguing against the government’s ban on its service. The ad states that Uber has 150,000 users in Hungary and provides work to 1,200 honest taxpaying people, arguing that it is wrong to ban something that is loved by users.

Inspections of ride-hailing service Uber by the national tax office NAV since January 1 have uncovered 20 drivers with no tax numbers, the office said. NAV has so far conducted 250 inspections in the form of “test rides” and levied fines of 3.6 million forints (EUR 11,500) during the period, it said. The government is acting to ban access to the Uber application and website and those of similar taxi service companies, Development Ministry state secretary János Fónagy announced on Friday. He said the cabinet approved a bill to that effect on Wednesday that will be filed in Parliament on Monday.
