The State Medical Office on Tuesday stepped up the heat alert in effect for the whole country to third degree – the highest – and extended the alert until midnight Friday. The statement said temperatures are forecast to reach 33-36C today and up to 37C on Thursday.

The introduction of a congestion fee by the summer of 2013 may seem early, but it is unavoidable to raise funds for the financing of the Budapest transport company BKV, Budapest mayor István Tarlós said yesterday. The European Union set the congestion fee as a precondition for subsidising metro line number four, and it was accepted by the previous city leadership, Tarlós said last week.

Chief Rabbi Emeritus József Schweitzer was accosted by a man who swore at him and shouted, „I hate all Jews.” The incident took place in Budapest June 5, 2012.
