Business confidence improved slightly in the first quarter from the previous one, a gauge of sentiment by the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (MKIK) Economy and Business Research Institute (GVI) shows. GVI’s business confidence index edged up a single point to 33 from January to April.

Raiffeisen bank chief analyst Zoltán Török said the upgrade confirms efforts to stabilise the economy over the past 4-5 years. He said a fiscal loosening this year and next was “not to serious” and that the effect would be countered, in part, by policy measures boosting demand and contributing to economic growth.

Standard and Poor’s Ratings Services affirmed its ‘BB+/B’ long- and shortterm foreign and local currency sovereign credit ratings on Hungary. The outlook for Hungary remains stable, S+P said. Moody’s could raise Hungary’s sovereign rating to investment grade on Friday, but chances are better the ratings agency will wait till later this year for an upgrade, analysts told MTI. Moody’s is scheduled to make an announcement on a review of Hungary’s “Ba1” sovereign rating, which is one notch under investment grade, after 10pm on Friday, local time.
