Retail sales were down 2.5% year-on-year in May, after a decline of 2.8% in April, the Central Statistics Office announced yesterday. Sales contracted 0.1% from April and were down 1% in January-May. Sales volume totalled Ft 668 billion in May and Ft 3.1 trillion in the first five months.

The five largest home improvement chains in Hungary have lost 20% of their revenue in the past five years, according to data compiled by Napi Gazdasag. The combined revenues of OBI, Praktiker, BauMax, BricoStore and Bauhaus reached Ft 141 billion in 2008, but that figure has since fallen to Ft 115 billion by 2011.

This week the Hungarian Central Statistics Office (KSH) announced that local retail sales fell 2.7% - year-on-year - in March 2012. Also adjusted for seaonal effects, retail sales were down in April by 1.0% compared to the same month in 2011. Overall 2011 retail sales were slightly up on 2010 by 0.2% , rising that year for the first time since 2006.

The total value of goods bought online reached Ft 155 billion last year, research institute GKI reported. The 1.4 million people who made online purchases amount to 35% of the population above age 14. The leading products sold are food or food-related goods, GKI pointed out.
