Retail sales in Hungary were up by 5% in December last year, as compared to the same period a year earlier according to raw data, and that figure rose 4.5% adjusted for calendar effects, Hungary’s Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported today.

Customs officers seized 3,700 packs of untaxed cigarettes at Budapest airport from two passengers arriving from Dubai. They had six suitcases with 4,000 packets of cigarettes and a further 51kg of tobacco. The value of the goods seized is estimated at Ft 7.5 million.

The national tax authority (NAV) has purchased a drone to detect and monitor routes of cigarette smuggling, daily Magyar Idők said, citing a NAV spokesperson. The aircraft, bought at a cost of 20 million forints (EUR 65,000) in European Union funding, completes a range of special equipment such as night vision devices, thermal cameras as well as a hovercraft to control riverways.
