Rules On The Hungarian Roads To Be Stiffen From July 2013
As of July 1st, new regulations regarding drunk driving have been introduced. Hungary, just like Czech Republic, Romania, and Slovakia, has adopted the strict zero tolerance to drunk driving. According to the Punishment of Violation of Road Traffic Regulations amendment, it is illegal to drive with a higher blood-alcohol level than the allowed 0.5 percent, with the immediate repercussion of one’s driving license taken away.

Up to 0.5‰ alcohol in blood is considered a minor offence and results in a fine and/or the withdrawal of driving licence.
Drivers detected with more than 0.5‰ alcohol will receive 5 penalty points, a fine up to 100,000 HUF and a driving ban spanning 1-12 months.

If the drunk driver provokes an accident and causes serious injuries, the driver can face up to ten years of imprisonment.

The primary aim of the new regulation is to decrease the number of accidents caused by drunk driving.
