MPs To Expand Free Cash Withdrawals In Hungary
Parliament could vote in February on increasing the number of free cash withdrawals from ATMs, Antal Rogán, group leader of the ruling Fidesz party, told TV2. Parliament recently approved legislation allowing two free cash withdrawals a month up to a combined 150,000 forints (EUR 490).

Fidesz lawmaker Szilárd Németh told public radio on Sunday that he had proposed to Fidesz MPs raising the monthly limit on free withdrawals and increasing their number from two to four.

Rogán said the measure would be justified by the banks’ “attempts to deceive” people by insisting that several automated teller machines allow cash withdrawals up to only 50,000 forints.

He said the government would this week hold talks with the banking association. In the absence of compromise, the government will submit a bill to parliament for a vote to be held during the short spring session in early February, Rogán said.

The bill will tighten the rules for banks and envisage fines of up to 500 million forints (EUR 1.6m) for banks that implement measures affecting a large number of clients unfavourably.
