Winelovers Awards: Tokaj Stands Out at International Tasting Competition
Judges from all over the world have arrived to Budapest to asses the third edition of the Winelovers Wine Awards. The number of wines entered for the competition this year was 868, bringing it up to the prestigious level of wine competitions organized in Hungary, Turizmus.com reports.

The Winelovers Wine Awards has been international from the start, with 22 countries and 60 wine regions represented this year.

The organizers’ long-term goal is to make it the most important wine meeting in the Eastern and Central European region.

This year, 6 of the 868 different lots scored 95 points or more and were awarded the Grand Gold, the most prestigious award of the competition.

Hungarian wines were successful in all eight categories. The highest score, 97 points, was achieved by Matyisák Winery and Kádárüzem’s Tokaji Esszencia 2008.

In total 163 wines won gold medals, and 393 silver medals and 222 bronze medals were awarded.

The most successful domestic winery with 6 gold medals was Trifecta Wines, winning the Winery of the Year title, and the most medal-winning foreign winery was Romania’s Crama Girboiu with 4 gold medals.

“Tokaji aszú is undoubtedly one of the best sweet wines in the world, and this time there were quite a few examples that showed this incredibly well. In these wines, a balance of sugar and vibrant acidity is matched by extraordinary complexity.

There were also some great Samorodni lots, that are a kind of fruitier, more pure expression of the wine region,” highlighted Caroline Gilby, Master of Wine, who has been on the jury every year so far, as a specialist in sweet wines.

Tokaji Aszú is one of the best-known naturally sweet wines in the world. In 16th-century Tokaj, there were already specific descriptions of the production of sweet wines and the vineyards in the region that were the most suitable for cultivating grapes to produce aszú.

Tokaj was the first wine region in the world to regulate the origin of its grapes and thus its wines.

The publication of the results will be followed by the publication of an online brochure in English, that will be distributed to thousands of merchants, wine experts and press representatives worldwide.

The 100 Best Hungarian Wines print magazine will feature the best Hungarian entries, and wine lovers and laypeople will be able to taste the winning Hungarian entries at the Winelovers 100 Grand Tasting on September 14.
