Come Help Fill Sandbags: Magyar Trades Sharp Barbs with PM’s Political Advisor
Tisza Party president Péter Magyar definitively rejected an invitation to appear on state TV on Thursday to engage in a discussion with the prime minister’s political director Balázs Orbán, saying it would be irresponsible while Hungary faces mass flooding.

In a situation of real danger, responsible politicians organise the defence of the nation, and actively take part in that, he said.

State TV news channel M1 invited Orbán and Magyar to appear on the “48 perc” programme, to be aired on Thursday.

Instead of going to the studio, Magyar said he will await Orbán at the Római-part riverbank from 5-6 p.m. to help fill sandbags.

If Balázs Orbán insists on holding an exchange of views wearing a tie and a suit in the propaganda studio, he will have to wait for the flood to pass, Magyar concluded.

Orbán responded by saying “there is no room for politicising on the levees”.

He continued: “You have been disappointing the political public in Hungary for months by saying that nobody will debate with you, and you are not invited to the state TV.

“Then, when given the space and the platform, you try to avoid the debate in a manner reminiscent of an eel. Never mind, I will wait. I wonder what the excuse will be next time. You have a world-class record of making excuses and accusations."

Magyar implied that he might not debate with the prime minister’s advisor in any case, as he declared that MTVA CEO Dániel Papp had confused the two Orbáns, adding "As the leader of the largest opposition party, I have something to discuss with your boss on behalf of Hungarians."
