Why Increased Austrian Police Presence in Hungary?
The number of Austrian police officers is being raised to more effectively fight illegal migration, people smuggling and other cross-border crimes, the police said on its official website.

Under an agreement signed by the two countries' interior ministers in 2020, Austrian policemen have been helping protect the external borders of the European Union in Hungary, as well as curb illegal migration and people smuggling, police.hu said.

On Monday, 7 police officers joined the 18 already serving in Hungary, and their number is planned to come to 48-50 by the end of the month, to conduct joint patrols with Hungarian colleagues, the statement said.

Is Europe’s future on the ballot in Hungary? In Budapest, the US vice president is actively stumping for far-right incumbent Viktor Orban who trails in the polls ahead of Sunday’s general election.
