Heat Alert in Hungary: Second-Level Warning Issued Nationwide
- 27 Jun 2025 4:04 PM
Authorities are urging the public to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and take precautions to prevent heat-related health risks. It’s particularly important to check vehicles after parking to ensure no child, pet, or heat-sensitive item has been left inside.
The heat is especially dangerous for young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with cardiovascular conditions. To reduce the risk of heat stress, it's recommended to cool the body using water sprays, damp cloths, lukewarm showers, or even brief foot baths.
Food safety is also a concern during extreme heat. Perishable items, especially animal-based products, spoil quickly — so avoid leaving groceries in the car and be cautious with leftovers.
Motorists are advised to be extra patient and alert, as the heat can impair concentration and reaction times. Never walk dogs on hot pavement or asphalt, which can reach 60–70°C, potentially causing burns to their paws.
The heat can also affect home safety. In households using open-flame water heaters, reduced chimney ventilation may increase the risk of carbon monoxide buildup. This week alone, firefighters responded to 36 CO incidents across the country.
Outdoor fires are strictly prohibited during the alert period, though grilling and cooking in private gardens is allowed — but only under constant supervision. Firefighters were called to 395 outdoor fires this week, including one that spread over 60 hectares.
To stay informed, residents are encouraged to download the VÉSZ app, which provides real-time alerts about extreme weather and other emergencies.
As of now, the heat alert remains in place until midnight on Friday 4 July.
On Thursday, record-breaking temperatures were reported across Hungary, with some areas nearing 40°C.
Stay safe, stay cool, and take care of each other during this extreme weather.
