Watch: Wacky Racers Battle in Budapest at Red Bull Soapbox
You can see wildly creative gravity-powered vehicles hurtling down the Tabán hillside on 20 September, as the Red Bull Soapbox Race returns to Budapest.

Previous competitors have turned up with creations including an igloo carrying a polar-bear driver, a vehicle based on a hospital bed, alongside homemade designs inspired by films, video games and pop culture.

With no engines involved, gravity does the work, while competitors battle for speed, creativity and entertainment value. Known in Hungary as the Red Bull Ládaderbi, the event combines downhill racing with comic performances and some inevitably spectacular crashes.

The vehicles range from imaginative works of engineering to gloriously impractical contraptions, with teams putting just as much effort into entertaining the crowd as getting across the finish line.

The event returned to Hungary in 2024 after a 16-year absence, attracting around 20,000 spectators. This year's race will once again take place in the Tabán, with a course of around 400 metres running down the hillside below Buda Castle.

Participating teams must build vehicles that comply with specific size and weight requirements, while functioning steering and brakes are compulsory. Even though the vehicles are powered solely by gravity, drivers must be at least 18 years old.

The event starts at 10am, with free admission for spectators.

Some of the teams and their creations will also be on display on Saturday, 19 September, ahead of the main event.

Location:
Tabán, 1010 Budapest
