Silvanus Hotel Visegrád: On the Edge of a Rebirth
Once upon a time, there was a hotel…

In 1971, to coincide with the World Hunting Exhibition, a hotel was built that met the high standards of the era: Hotel Silvanus. By the early 1990s, the building had become very outdated.
In 1992, it was purchased on credit by three families, though in the end it was the Lantos family who remained as owners and operators; from 2011, the Kárász family also joined the management team. In the decades following privatisation, Silvanus not only survived — unlike its sister hotel in Dobogókő, Nimród — but entered a second golden age.

Under the leadership of CEO Árpád Lantos, the hotel expanded from 70 to 150 rooms, evolving in step with changing trends and expectations in tourism and hospitality. Alongside numerous domestic and international awards, the Silvanus — famous for its stunning panoramic views—was named Hotel of the Year in 2018.

At the time, no-one imagined that after a devastating hotel fire, this second golden era would be followed by a third. So how did it happen?

Nearly two years have passed since that day in the spring of 2024 which brought life at the iconic Silvanus hotel on the Danube Bend, to a halt. It has been two years since parts of the third and fourth floors were almost completely destroyed by fire.

On that day, shock, sadness and uncertainty filled the hotel. Everyone struggled to process what had happened, and although the situation seemed hopeless, the management did not give up. They took responsibility for their employees — just as the employees had previously stood by the hotel.

From this came a powerful, defining idea: “Together, we will get back on our feet.”

This became the guiding principle that carried everyone through. Each working day began with a shared discussion: what needed to be done, what the next steps would be. Perhaps this is why a sense of hope and solidarity remained strong, and why people continued to believe in the hotel’s future.

During this period, some members of the leadership team held more than 170 key meetings.

The magical panorama of the Danube Bend, usually visible from the building, disappeared for months behind scaffolding and protective sheeting. The daily rhythm of hospitality — so central to life here — also came to a stop: the routines for staff, the familiar habits of returning guests, family celebrations, weekend getaways. The silence at the top of the hill told a very different story.

Today, at the start of 2026, those same spaces — once captured only in images of destruction — are once again filled with light, movement and laughter. This story is not about the fire, but about what followed.

Two Years Later

Standing here in 2026, it is hard to imagine the scale of the damage. The renewed Silvanus has not simply been restored; it has been re-thought.

The façade is cleaner, the glass surfaces larger, and the view of the Danube Bend feels almost as if it permeates the rooms themselves. The building is lighter, brighter and more contemporary, while retaining the distinctive, almost “sitting above-the-world” atmosphere that has always defined the hotel.

Classical renovated rooms; new designed renovated rooms

Many of the rooms have been completely re-designed. At the same time, in certain room categories, care was taken to preserve elements of the original character — wood panelling, antique-style furniture and the established colour palette.

These rooms have also been refurbished, with all carpets and wall coverings replaced, and the furniture restored and refinished.

Wellness Area

The indoor pools, jacuzzis, saunas and therapy rooms have all been upgraded. The outdoor Infinity Pool has been reborn as an infinity pool, featuring a glass wall overlooking the view and a “floating” section supported by pillars.

Together, these changes have elevated the experience of relaxation and rejuvenation at Silvanus to a new level.

Communal Spaces

What was once a simple beer hall has been completely transformed. Compared to its pre-fire state, it has been rebuilt from the ground up and now welcomes guests as the Silvanus Sport Pub, with a modern interior and a new identity.

The change is not only visual — it is felt in the atmosphere. A contemporary social space has been created, designed to meet today’s expectations.

Conference Facilities

The hotel’s conference rooms have also undergone significant development. Their design is now more refined, elegant and modern, improving not only aesthetics but overall comfort. Technical capabilities have been substantially expanded and upgraded.

The rooms are equipped with integrated sound systems, professional speakers and built-in projection screens, ensuring that presentations and events can run smoothly and efficiently.

Corridors

Corridors on every level have been given a unified, fully updated look. Images from March 2024 show the immediate aftermath of the fire, particularly on the fourth floor, where the extent of the damage was severe. By contrast, the renovated corridors reflect a complete transformation, with modern finishes, updated lighting and carefully designed interiors.

Terraces

The terraces also reflect the building’s updated approach. Wooden railings have been entirely replaced with glass, creating a cleaner, more elegant appearance while offering a greater sense of space and uninterrupted views. The transparent surfaces add a distinctly premium feel.

The furnishings have also been replaced. Modern black seating now complements the new design and provides a comfortable setting for guests to relax.

Looking Back After Two Years

One thing is clear: Hotel Silvanus has not lost its identity.

The rebuilding process did not create a new brand, but rather a strengthened and re-imagined version of the original, one that still carries its core values. The Silvanus community — staff, partners and guests — remained present throughout. This sense of unity made it possible to move beyond the narrative of disaster, and instead focus on how a crisis can lead to meaningful progress.

Silvanus Hotel ****superior

The hotel is now proud to hold a four-star superior rating, reflecting the hard work of recent years.

This recognition is not the result of a single decision or investment, but of a long and carefully planned process. After the fire in 2024, the goal was never simply to rebuild. From the earliest stages of planning, it was clear that reconstruction would also mean raising standards.

From structural work to interior design and the complete re-thinking of services, every decision was guided by the aim of reopening Silvanus as a more stable, modern and guest-focused hotel.

Achieving this classification is not the end of the story, but a confirmation of the journey taken over the past two years — a journey that turned challenges into development, loss into opportunity, and a fresh start into a higher standard of hospitality.
