Hungarian director Károly Mészáros’s first cinema film, the absurd romantic comedy Liza, The Fox-Fairy, has won the main prize and the award for the best visual effects at the thirty-fifth Fantasporto international film festival, held in Porto, Portugal. It is the first time in the festival’s 35-year history that the main prize, named Fastasporto Grand Prix, has gone to a Hungarian movie.

Multi-award winning Hungarian film director and screenwriter Miklós Jancsó, considered one of the film greats of the 1960s and 1970s, has died at the age of 92. Jancsó won best director award at the 1972 Cannes film festival for Red Psalm, and, in 1979, Cannes bestowed on him a lifetime achievement award.
