Hungary’s poultry producers are in a panic as the cut to the VAT rate on pork from 27% to 5% as of January 1 has led to a significant drop in demand for poultry meat, and other food sectors are lobbying for similar VAT decreases, Hungarian economic daily Világgazdaság reported today.

Only 17 percent of respondents in a recent survey said they ate in a restaurant at least once a month, while 29 percent never did, the paper said.

The government could introduce a new tax on large retail chains in the spring, government commissioner for retail policy Kristóf Szatmáry told Magyar Idõk. The levy would hit high turnover retail chains in order to "correct biased market conditions," and help smaller businesses, which, he noted, are mostly owned by Hungarians.
