Budapest Gay Pride Festival Gets Under Way

The 22nd Budapest Pride festival of the gay (LGBTQ) community opened on Friday night. At the opening ceremony, Szilvia Nagy of the organising Rainbow Mission Foundation said it was “not easy” to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer in Hungary, and recalled that it was in 2007 for the first time that Pride marchers in Budapest were attacked by violent “counter-demonstrators”.

Budapest’s Szabadság (Freedom) square hosted a novel demonstration of sorts Saturday evening. Starting at 5:30 pm and lasting until 10 pm, the “We will not remain silent!” protest featured musical performances by a variety of musicians and DJs, as well as speeches by notable artists and activists. As many as 10,000 people mostly in their twenties and thirties attended.

The Heineken Budapest Nightlife Awards 2017 lined up 150 nominees in 12 categories, and the top three places in each category are listed below - based on almost 30 thousand votes from people based in Budapest.
