By Mary Murphy: While out on Friday night, a Hungarian friend mentioned that the Monk of the Gulag had died earlier this week (January 15th), aged 100. As I’d never heard of him, I asked her to tell me some more.

China’s BYD will build its first electric bus plant in Komárom, in northern Hungary, the foreign minister announced at a press conference in Budapest on Monday. The 6.2 billion forint (EUR 20.4m) project includes Hungarian government support of 925 million forints, Péter Szijjártó said.

The Birth of Colours is a one-hour total-art performance with a 57-member mixed choir, four narrators, percussion instruments and singing bowls. The composer is the Italian Lucio Ivaldi, and the libretto was written by American poet David Brendan Hopes.

A 4,000 ton waste depot caught fire at the power plant Vértesi Erõmû in Oroszlány, Komárom-Esztergom county on Friday. Firemen removed material from the depot to extinguish the fire with water.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed concern over investigations the Romanian authorities have launched against Hungarian politicians in Transylvania and said there has been a general “reversal” in minority rights for ethnic kin in Romania. Addressing the MÁÉRT session, Orbán said that the European rights of “our communities” are “being questioned” in terms of the use of minority language.
