Tesco Reduces Number Of Tobacco Shops In Hungary

New regulations banning national tobacco shops from hypermarkets and other big stores from May 30 will cause retail chain Tesco to close 86 out of its 113 tobacco units, business daily Világgazdaság said on Friday. Under the new rules, tobacco shops, which are a state monopoly, will not be allowed in stores with an area larger than 2,500 square metres or at petrol stations.

The national tax office (NAV) has clamped down on a retail ring involving large-scale tax fraud, involving 13 suspects. One person is already in pre-trial custody, NAV told MTI. The supermarket chain based in Pécs, southwest Hungary, distributed cleaning products, home appliances, sweets and coffee, but did not pay value added tax (VAT) on its sales.

For the first time, small size duty free items will be allowed onboard Ryanair aircraft. This new rule comes in to effect as of 1st December 2013 on all flights of Ryanair across their network, including from Budapest Airport.
