Xpat Opinion: Medián Poll On Hungarian Anti-Semitism

A while back Medián conducted a survey on anti-Semitism in Hungary. It just made its findings public. The document is almost forty pages long, full of tables and graphs, and defies being summarized in a few paragraphs. Here I will concentrate on a couple of areas of the study I personally found interesting and/or significant.
Eurostat Survey Shows Interest In EU Politics Rising

Interest in the politics of the European Union has risen among Hungarians and citizens of member states as well, according to a Eurobarometer opinion survey. Fully 53% of Hungarian respondents said they were interested in the EU’s policies, compared to 54% in the whole of the bloc, on average.
Four Hungarian Regions Among EU ’s Poorest

Four Hungarian regions are among the European Union’s twenty poorest, according to a Eurostat report. Magyar Nemzet and Világgazdaság cited the survey on Monday, noting that northern Hungary, the northern and southern parts of the Great Plains and the south-west region lagged behind severely, in spite of Hungary’s drawing down the biggest amount of EU funds from among the former East Bloc.

Hungary Lags Behind In Foreign Language Learning

Hungary ranked low among EU member states as regards learning two or more foreign languages in secondary school, a survey conducted by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, showed. In Hungary only 6.3% of secondary school students aged between 11 and 14 learned two or more foreign languages, similar to Austria where their proportion was 9.5%, the survey conducted in 2014 showed.

Hungarians are divided in their opinion about two leading politicians in Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, a recent survey by Nézőpont Institute shows. However the Russian president was seen positively by 46% and critically by only 28%, whereas his US counterpart was seen favourably by 59% and negatively by only 18%.
Immigrants In Hungary Over Qualified

The proportion of highly qualified young people is much higher among immigrants than among Hungarians in the country, the daily Magyar Nemzet said, citing figures by the Central Statistical Office. The survey was of non-EU immigrants who have settled in Hungary over the past few years. The proportion of graduates among the immigrants surveyed was 2.5-times higher than among Hungarians.

If, however, the community is unable to move past its disputes, the EU will require a rethink, the prime minister said in an interview to the Thursday issue of daily Magyar Idők.
