The government has decided to extend a mandatory cap on markups for a range of food products until the end of August, Gergely Gulyas, the head of the Prime Minister's Office, said at a weekly press briefing.
Hungary's annualised consumer price index fell to 4.2pc in April from 4.7pc in the previous month, data released by the Central Statistics Office (KSH) show.
Retail chains were making out-sized profits on food and "we had to step in", Prime Minister Viktor Orban said.
