Companies Hit by High Electricity Prices in Hungary

Across nearly all consumption bands, Hungarian companies paid some of the highest net and gross electricity prices in the EU, further undermining the competitiveness of the industrial sector.
In the lowest annual consumption band of 20-499MWh, Hungarian SMEs paid the second-highest gross price in Europe at €0.3248/kWh, trailing only Ireland.
Industrial-scale consumers with annual consumption of 70,000-150,000MWh paid the fourth-highest net price (€0.1630/kWh), a 20.6% annual increase.
The picture looks more favourable for non-residential retail industrial gas users, except for the largest industrial consumers, as prices in all four consumption bands fell by 2-12% in the second half of 2024.
Smaller players received gas at relatively competitive prices, below the EU average.
Among the largest users – firms consuming 1-4 million gigajoules (39,000-392,000m3) per year – Hungary recorded by far the highest net gas price in the EU, at €0.0605/kWh, 28% above the EU average.
