Update: ‘Museums May Festival’ in Hungary, 16 - 17 May
- 14 May 2026 1:06 PM
Press Release:
Based on the forecast of HungaroMet Hungarian Meteorological Service Nonprofit Ltd., the Hungarian National Museum, as the organiser of the Museum May Festival, has decided on the following changes regarding the programme series planned for 16–17 May 2026 in the Museum Garden.
According to the forecasts, wind gusts of 30–40 km/h and significant rainfall are expected on Saturday. However, the weather conditions are not expected to endanger the outdoor programmes planned for that day. Visitors are nevertheless advised to bring umbrellas and raincoats.
According to the currently available forecasts for Sunday, strong wind gusts may exceed 50 km/h in some areas, which would jeopardise the safe use of the tents.
Therefore, as a responsible decision, we are unfortunately forced to cancel the Sunday programmes planned for the Museum Garden and dismantle the tents erected in the garden for safety reasons.
The indoor programmes of the Museum May Festival, announced inside the building of the Hungarian National Museum — including the craft workshop of the Kiss Áron Hungarian Toy Society, the “Family at the Museum: Medieval Adventures” programme, as well as professional events such as the ICOM roundtable discussion “Museums and Young People”, the programme of the National Museological Methodological and Information Centre, the book launch presenting the history of the Museum of Ethnography, smaller musical performances, and further events — will take place as planned on both Saturday and Sunday.
Please note that programmes may change due to changing weather conditions. Up-to-date information will be continuously provided on the social media platforms of the Hungarian National Museum.
We hope that despite the unfavourable weather, many visitors will still attend our event.
Please remember: during the Museum May Festival, all exhibitions of the Hungarian National Museum can be visited free of charge.
Earlier:
The weekend programme positions museums as cultural meeting points for visitors, institutions and professionals.
Taking the theme forward, it shows museums serving as spaces where historical experiences address present-day questions and support collective reflection on the future.
Organisers emphasise museums' role beyond exhibitions — as active community hubs built around shared histories, memories and values.
The two days include diverse programmes, interactive presentations, guided tours and discussions, family activities, and community experiences. .
