Mandatory Doctor E-Referrals in Hungary Given 'One-Year Grace Period'
The government will allow a one-year grace period before electronic referrals become mandatory in health care, government spokeswoman Anita Kobol said at a press conference on Thursday.

Kobol said e-referrals were introduced in January 2021 to simplify administration and cut red tape for both doctors and patients, but added that the system was erratic.

"Many still use hard copy and prefer paper, and in many places further IT development is needed," she said.

Under current regulations, doctors failing to use e-referrals should have faced penalties from June, but the government has postponed this by a year, she said.

Kobol said the move would be subject to a social consultation.
