You haven’t been in Hungary twenty four hours before you have discovered Matyó. Matyó is a style of embroidery which has existed in Hungary for over 200 years and it is sold all over Budapest in souvenir shops on the Castle Hill and all over the centre of the city. Matyó emanates from a little triangle of villages 140 kilometres from Budapest on the way to Miskolc, in Mezőkövesd, Tard and ...
Uniquely Hungary: Delighted To See Ludwig Go Pop In Budapest, By Anne Zwack

Until I came to this sensational exhibition at the Ludwig Museum I didn’t know I liked Pop Art. Basically I only knew Warhol’s Campbell Soup and Lichtenstein’s comic strips which are here as well, but I was unprepared for the arresting impact of this huge collection of art works whose artistic quality, it seems to me, outweighs what they call in marketing meetings here the “Vow Effect”.
Uniquely Hungary: Fish Among Other Things, By Anne Zwack

I think the one thing most expats miss in Hungary is the sea, and perhaps not only the expats. Driving into the country the other day I saw on the one billboard blank of ads and propaganda someone had written: Now that we have a Mediterranean climate couldn’t we have a sea as well?
Uniquely Hungary: Retro Coffee Houses, Bars & 'Cukraszdas' In Budapest
- 10 Sep 2015 1:22 AM
- food & drink
By Anne Zwack: Budapest has evolved so much over the last 25 years as to make many of its features almost unrecognizable and few coffee houses from the previous eras have lived to tell the tale. There is, of course, Gerbeaud while Ruszwurm on the Castle Hill has remained almost exactly the same as it was when my husband was taken there eighty years ago as a treat if he got a good report at school.
Uniquely Hungary: The Budapest Festival Orchestra, By Anne Zwack

If asked what is the most famous Hungarian export one might mumble about salami and paprika and foie gras and then look vague. Meanwhile, I wonder how many people know on the other hand that the Budapest Festival Orchestra today is bringing the best of Hungary all over the world.
Uniquely Hungary: Help Others By Recycling Your Jeans, By Anne Zwack

Even for someone as unversed in fashion as I am, it has not escaped my attention that denim is the hot item this year. Every leading designer worth his salty prices has come out with a new angle on denim and jeans, including Christopher Kane who embroiders them with what look like matyo flowers.
Uniquely Hungary: Insights Into Budapest's Flea Markets, By Anne Zwack
- 16 Apr 2015 11:30 AM
- shopping
For those of you, like me, who have been going to the Ecseri Piac Flea Market for twenty years it is very sad to see how it is winding down. It used to be a regular Saturday rendezvous for diplomats and expats, and we would all have lunch in the little family run kocsma in the far left corner.
Uniquely Hungary: 'Highway To Hell' On The Danube, By Anne Zwack
- 14 Apr 2015 9:00 AM
- getting around
As soon as we are blessed with warmer weather, an exciting alternative to Hop on Hop off for special guests visiting Budapest, or for special occasions in general, could be a private cruise on the Danube. The two Dunarama boats called Lakmusz and Unicum are the naval equivalent of a limousine with inside comfort and outside seating in an old fashioned wooden motor boat like the launches on the ...
Uniquely Hungary: Meeting Late Martin Munkacsi, By Anne Zwack
- 26 Feb 2015 11:04 AM
- community & culture
Hungary must have more famous photographers per capita than any other country: Capa, Kertesz, Brassai, Moholy-Nagy but Munkacsi was the one who brought movement and joie de vivre to photography. Women laughing as they leapt over puddles, goalkeepers diving for the ball, dancers, divers, wrestlers, children running into the surf, Fred Astaire clicking his heels in mid air.
