Clarinet player Sándor Benkó, founder of the popular Benkó Dixieland Band, died on Tuesday at the age of 75, his family announced. Benkó started the group while a high school student in 1957. Its first album was certified a gold disc. The band toured the world, took part in many music festivals and received numerous awards. The band has no fewer than 1,800 professional recordings.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed concern over investigations the Romanian authorities have launched against Hungarian politicians in Transylvania and said there has been a general “reversal” in minority rights for ethnic kin in Romania. Addressing the MÁÉRT session, Orbán said that the European rights of “our communities” are “being questioned” in terms of the use of minority language.

Democracy must be “cured of liberal dominance”, Fidesz MEP György Schöpflin said at a conference organised by the European People’s Party group in Budapest. It is time to end the rule of liberal values over Western democracy, Schöpflin said, arguing that the “liberal way of speaking” goes against its own professed set of values by regarding its views as “unquestionable”.
