Dialogue for Hungary MPs Benedek Jávor yesterday politely rejected an invitation from Socialist Party president Attila Mesterházy to join the opposition consultations that have been going on since early January. Mesterházy wrote to Jávor and fellow MP Tímea Szabó, expressing hope that they share the Socialists’ view of the need for the democratic opposition to combine their forces.

Although the leaders of HÖOK insist that “student unity” is intact, I see it differently. The Orbán government as usual has managed to drive a wedge between the two organizations: HÖOK, the present-day KISZ, and the newly formed HaHa (Hallgatói Hálózat). I helped offer a Christmas lunch to the least well-off in Budapest today. It was the best thing I’ve done since I arrived here. The Hungarian Interchurch Aid organisation ran the event, with support from local companies, and I went down with a small group from the Embassy to do what we could to contribute.
Hungarian Court Broadens Definition Of Family

The Constitutional Court struck down provisions on the notion of family and inheritance law in the act on family protection on Monday. The court established that certain provisions contravene the Basic Law. It found that the act on family law defined family too narrowly as the marriage of one man and one woman only.
