After the Hungarian government scrapped the Sunday closings law that prevented retailers from opening on Sundays, the majority of retailers present in Hungary announced that they would open from May 8, while some retailers already opened for business this past Sunday, according to reports.

In a poll conducted recently by online news portal origo.hu, 85% of the siteʼs readers said they support the reopening of stores on Sundays, but government friendly daily Magyar Idők reported today that the increase in payroll resulting from the Sunday reopenings may have to be passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices.

Over 520,000 retail bank accounts have been wound up since the introduction of the transaction tax in 2013, business daily Világgazdaság reported. Citing National Bank of Hungary data, the paper said that there were 9.32 million private individual bank accounts at the end of last year, the lowest number since the bank started tracking this kind of data in 2010.

Hairdressers and cosmeticians will be exempt of the mandatory use of tills connected directly to the national tax office, but the industry can expect regular tax inspections as before, daily Magyar Idők said on Wednesday. The government made online tills mandatory for retail shops in 2014 to eliminate VAT fraud as part of its efforts to whiten the economy.

Retail sales in Hungary could come close to 10,000 billion forints this year, the chief secretary of the National Association of Commerce (OKSZ) told public television.
