Organisers of Budapest’s 2024 Olympic bid unveiled their logo at a media ceremony on top of Gellért Hill on Thursday. The logo displays an image of the Statue of Liberty atop a green hill, looking onto a series of waves representing the Danube in the colours of the Olympic rings.

At a time when statues are going up all over Budapest I would like to nominate a candidate for the ugliest statue in town. You should drive up above the Gellért Hotel to the corner of Minerva and Pipacs utca where the one time Swedish Legation is located.

One of the frustrating things about Budapest is that you can’t capture all of its major landmarks in one photo, despite many of them being so close together. There’s nowhere you can stand where you can take a photo that includes all four of the most famous bridges, that also includes the Liberty Statue and the Buda Castle plus the Parliament building on the other side of the Danube. From the Island of Mohács the „devils” still come on boats, according to the legend. Those arriving by boats walk to Kóló Square to join the rest, and then all proceed through the streets, mixing in with the audience along the way.

Buda Central District Court yesterday acquitted rap singer László Pityinger, known as “Dopeman,” of a charge of rowdy conduct for his actions at an anti-government protest in September 2013. A polystyrene statue of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was symbolically pulled down during the rally on Clark Ádám tér. When the head of the statue broke off, Pityinger kicked it along the ground.
