Free Travel for Dogs & Bicycles on MAV Trains in Budapest from January
Budapest city council has decided to allow dogs and bicycles to travel for free on all MAV Group trains within Budapest from January 1 of next year.

The offer applies to holders of national, Pest-Varmegye and Budapest passes, free travel entitlements, or monthly job-seeker passes.

The measure extends to suburban and non-local domestic trains, Intercity Volan services, and the H5, H6, H7, H8 and H9 HEVs but excludes buses.

For InterCity, express, and some international trains within Budapest, bicycle tickets remain mandatory.

Dogs and bicycles still require tickets for travel beyond city limits.

The free dog and bicycle initiative was proposed by Alexandra Szentkiralyi, leader of the Fidesz group on Budapest city council, inspired by Construction and Transport Minister Janos Lazar.

Szentkiralyi wrote on her Facebook page that she would also submit a proposal to the city council to waive fares for dogs and bicycles on Budapest buses.
