Red Code Issued in Hungary Due to Extreme Cold
Considering the HungaroMet forecast, the State Secretary for Social Care at the Ministry of the Interior (BM) has issued the Red Code from Monday at 8 PM until Friday.

The Red Code serves two crucial purposes:

Firstly, it raises public awareness about the extraordinary situation. Secondly, under the special protocol, all social institutions must accommodate homeless individuals upon notification from the dispatch service, regardless of their usual clientele.

Currently, the occupancy rate of night shelters stands at 84% nationwide and in Budapest, meaning there are sufficient spaces available - no one has to spend the night on the streets.

Important:

If you see a homeless person in distress, please call the regional dispatch service. They can take immediate action based on reports.

During the special protocol period, protecting lives is the top priority in homeless care, as emphasized in the statement.

A Bright but Bitterly Cold Start to the Week in Hungary

The new week kicks off with sunny, dry, yet freezing weather, with daytime highs ranging from 1 to 5°C. However, the nights will bring severe frosts, with temperatures in wind-sheltered valleys dropping below -12°C.

A gradual warming trend is expected midweek, according to the latest HungaroMet Zrt. forecast:

  • Monday: Mostly clear and sunny, though scattered clouds may appear in western and northern regions. No precipitation is expected. The highest temperature will be around 2–3°C, while a light easterly breeze may bring occasional gusts east of the Danube.

  • Tuesday: Another bright and dry day, though clouds may increase temporarily. The night will be bitterly cold, with lows between -12 and -5°C, possibly lower in frost-prone areas. Daytime temperatures will reach 1–5°C.

  • Wednesday & Thursday: Clear, sunny, and dry, with nighttime lows between -12 and -4°C. Daytime highs will slowly climb to 6–8°C by Thursday.

  • Friday to Sunday: A mix of sun and scattered clouds, with no rain in sight. Nighttime temperatures will gradually rise, with lows between -10 and -1°C, while daytime highs will edge up to 10°C by Sunday.

Despite the icy nights, the week will remain mostly calm and dry, with plenty of sunshine to compensate for the chill.
