Highest Heat Alert Now - Free Water by MÁV
- 14 Aug 2025 10:14 AM
The authorities said that highest daytime temperatures could exceed 35 degrees in the next few days, and warned of the danger of dehydration, especially during outdoor programmes.
In the hottest hours people should seek shade or facilities with air conditioning, they added.
The authorities also called on people not to leave children, elderly persons or pets in parking cars, even for a short periods.
Anyone seeing people or animals in locked cars should call 112.
A ban on lighting fires stays in effect. The prohibition does not apply to barbecues in private gardens, but the fire must not be left unattended.
Free Water by MÁV Group
In response to the nationwide Level 3 heat alert issued by the Chief Medical Officer, the MÁV Group will be providing free bottled water to passengers at busy stations from 24 June until an expected end date of 27 June.
Water will be distributed daily between 10:00 and 17:00 at the main railway stations in Budapest, directly on the platforms, and at larger regional stations at the customer service desks and ticket offices.
Free water will also be available at the Volán bus stations in Budapest’s Népliget and Kelenföld, at the bus terminals in county capitals, and at the four main suburban railway (HÉV) terminal stations. Distribution is subject to stock availability.
In Budapest, bottled water will be handed out on the platforms at Déli, Keleti, and Nyugati stations, as well as at Rákospalota–Újpest during the Rákosrendező track closure.
In the countryside, passengers can collect water at the customer service desks in Debrecen, Győr, Miskolc, Nyíregyháza, Szeged, Pécs, Székesfehérvár, and Szolnok, and at ticket offices in Békéscsaba, Celldömölk, Fonyód, Kecskemét, Nagykanizsa, Siófok, Tapolca, and Veszprém. In many of these locations, student workers will also be helping with distribution.
Volán will offer mineral water (while supplies last) at two locations in Budapest – Népliget and Kelenföld – as well as at busy bus stations in county capitals and other towns, including Balatonfüred, Békéscsaba, Debrecen, Eger, Győr, Kaposvár, Kecskemét, Miskolc, Nyíregyháza, Pécs, Salgótarján, Szeged, Székesfehérvár, Szekszárd, Szolnok, Szombathely, Tatabánya, Veszprém, and Zalaegerszeg.
For HÉV suburban rail passengers, bottled water will be available at Batthyány tér, Örs vezér tere, Közvágóhíd, and Boráros tér stations, again subject to availability.
MÁV Group will continue to provide water daily between 10:00 and 17:00, for as long as the heat alert remains in force and while stocks last. Passengers are kindly asked to show a valid ticket or pass when collecting water.
Travellers are also reminded to set out with enough drinking water or other hydrating fluids for their journey.
